Out of School Academic Enrichment

Today, many children return to an empty home after school and during summer months. When the school bell rings, the anxiety for parents often just begins. They worry about whether their children are safe or whether they are susceptible to drugs and crime. In response to these pressing concerns, many communities have created after-school programs to keep children and youth out of trouble and engaged in activities that help them learn.

AKCCL is one of a few organizations that provides academic tutoring and enrichment to student and support to families through schools and community partners. Now service schools and communities in both Louisiana and California, AKCCL assists schools in providing support to the children and parents who need extended care after school and during summer months.

The organization works to relieve the burden of trying to complete homework during late night hours, while supporting the mission of the teacher and school, aligning to their academic mission, supporting their efforts in student achievement, and reducing academic regression. More importantly, it provides a program of substance employing educator that are vested in the growth and development of the students as opposed to just a holding site.

AKCCL supports parents by making the most of the time students spend in extended day programs while they are still working. Therefore, the parent can focus on quality family time after work hours without the hassle of a lot of school work, which prevent teachers from having to reteach content due to lack of practice, incomplete assignments, and unnecessary delays.

Home School & Virtual Learning Support

AKCCL Virtual Learning Academy and Home-Schooling Resource is an online program committed to empowering parents and students with tools and resources to develop a strong educational foundation, to create opportunities for social and emotional development, while creating cultural awareness and strengthening the bond of family and community in a virtual or home school learning environment.

Learning has always began at home.

Before the effects of COVID-19 began a virtual learning standard for students across the world, 49% of learners had experienced e-learning in the last year, according to Statista. The academic progress of children has to be carefully monitored as the landscape of learning dramatically shifts. By staying attuned to the lesson plans of teachers, parents can begin to recognize the signs of their child’s educational growth on their own. The benefits of e-learning far outweigh the challenges, and offer just as many, if not more, perks of an in-person classroom.

Virtual learning benefits include the following:

  • More cost-effective than some traditional schools and most private schools.

  • Immediate test feedback.

  • Wider variety of subjects than a standard in-person course.

  • More personalized lesson plans.

  • Greater schedule flexibility for families.

  • Fewer learning approaches with maximized performance impact.

  • Ease of accommodating special education needs.

  • Increased parental involvement in academics

CTE Certification Programs for Electrical & Welding

In partnership with ReCAST Baton Rouge, the Office of the Mayor President, and Baton Rouge Community College, AKCCL is please to announce open enrollment for its CTE youth training center scheduled to commence on Tuesday June 1, 2021. This is a 9 to 14 week accelerated course with a career and person planning core component online that must be completed before the start of the program.

Students ages 16 to 24 that meet eligibility requirements can enroll beginning March 25, 2022 until May 28, 2022. Currently, CTE courses offered will be Pipe Fitting/Welding and Electrical. Students are selected on a first come first serve basis. Students will complete this program with a level 1 certification in their selected course, and be automatically dual enrolled in BRCC. Many students in East Baton Rouge Parish Schools System have very little exposure to trades, occupations, or professions.

Furthermore, more than 80% of Baton Rouge students are below proficiency in Math, Reading/ELA or both as of October of 2020. Many of these students are not expected to attend any post-secondary schooling. What can we offer the students, our greatest resource, that will have a long time effect on the economic development of Baton Rouge, especially North Baton Rouge?

By giving our youth alternative pathways to education, employment, and personal development through CTE courses we can begin to change the social climate of the community (crime, poverty, educational inequalities, etc.) Teen employment in the U.S. is at its lowest level in 60 years – about 30%. Yet employers cannot find enough workers with demonstrated work competencies to meet job demands.
